Pittsburgh Jazz Night

My father was a little obsessed with music. I learned so much from him. One night, when I lived in Pittsburgh, I decided to go out to a jazz club by myself. I was about 35 or so years old at the time and I was sitting at the bar, alone. Sitting next to me was a black gentleman in his sixties who came to hear the music as well. We started speaking about Jazz and I started to reel off names of Jazz singers I enjoyed. He was quite shocked to see and hear that a petite Jewish girl from the south knew so much about Jazz.

A Different Kind of Kaddish

I think my breast cancer diagnosis was a way that my soul could grieve for my father. One of the most obvious ways others know you have had cancer is that your hair falls out as a result of chemo. Because I lost my hair temporarily, I made a cap from my husband's bike cap and a cap I bought from the American Cancer Society wig catalog. So I was actually wearing two (2) caps.

I was thinking that at this time I was covering my head and wearing a type of Kippot or Yarmulke. I am always looking for icons or images that mean something in my life. I am looking for meaning in symbols. The reason that one wears a Yarmulke is out of respect for God. Or that one has a fear of heaven. Hmm, why would anyone fear Heaven?
